I had been working out for years in my athletic days but fell due to depression for several years, now I'm back lifting again but do not really have any heavy weights; only a pair of 17 pound dumbbells.
Being out for so long I am struggling to get my bodyfat and hormones in check. I love to lift, even do dumbbell cleans and snatches, but have no bench or barbells - I wish I had room for some.
I think my training sessions are not as effective but still get workouts in and do get a good sweat. I do sprinting on elliptical or outside after workout and burpees. My wife and I work together and I do try to teach her all the exercises learned from my sport days. Thank you and if you have suggestions on improving my training always grateful for suggestions or criticism.
Cheers Keith, greatly appreciated. Love hearing from people starting - or continuing - their training journey. It's a wonderful thing.
I've got a few thoughts on how to go about fine-tuning things, as do a great many members of the community here I suspect. Will share them below, as well as in the Google+ area.
NB : I'd also love to hear what everyone else would suggest for Keith. Leave a comment below, or over on Google+. Cheers.

I was that kid who was really fat in high school, and started hitting the gym hard after graduation. Since then, I've finished my first BA and somewhere along the way I've lost 30lb, and turned most of my mass from fat to muscle. I've been doing dedicated weight training in the gym for about a year and a half now, having just recently recovered from a bad case of Crossfit blues. Currently I'm training to compete in my first Strongman contest next summer, and I'm pushing myself hard to reach my goals before I do so.
My training approaches are almost entirely self-taught. Youtube and the internet community are both great places to learn techniques and get tips from the pros. I've been tinkering with my own routine for about 9 months, and I've settled into a rotation that fits my needs and my body's abilities. I train a mixture of powerlifting and bodybuilding, mainly anything I can lift in the gym, and I devote one day out of my Eight Day cycle to training for strongman events, either using equipment my tiny gym has, or any lifts I can simulate using gym equipment. I'm working on some implement of my own at home, and hope to have my first lifting log carved soon.
Beyond that, I try to listen to my body when training. If I finish my squat sets on leg day, and my arms feel like they need to be hit, I'll do a few exercises for the arms and call it a day. If I'm not feeling my training, I'll probably call it a day, or change up my routine to something more suited to my energy levels. I think listening to your body, and learning what it needs, and when it needs a push, and when it doesn't, is the most important part of training.
Cheers Ben, appreciated.

Thank you for the warm welcome.
Up to age 18 I played sports, cycled and ran cross country (badly). At 18 I was 8 and a half stone (about 53kg/115lb). I started doing push-ups, chins and sit-ups for about six months; then I got Arnold's 'Bobybuilding for Teens' from the library and started doing weights in a gym in town.
I mixed Arnold with Stuart McRobert's 'Hardgainer' approach and started training twice a week - focusing on the powerlifts. That worked well for the next 6 years (I got to eleven stone of pure muscle).
Then I blew my ACL. I spent five years running, cycling, swimming and doing yoga; before I said "Lets lift again like we did last summer". It took a couple of years to kick back in and I discovered the fitness world was filled with wonderful gurus; notably Pavel, Dan John and Paul Wade. Now I deadlift to the max (140kg at 70kg bodyweight), do regular kettlebell and calisthenics work and have lifetime goal of deadlifting with 5 plates on either side. I'd also like 15 clean chins, 60 push ups in a minute, 200x24kg kb snatches in ten mins, 5 handstand wall push ups; and focus on health rather than muscle.
Cheers John, appreciated.
