Muscle type IIX - Test articles

Running miceResearchers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have been studying mice with a dominance of muscle type IIX, which allows them to run faster and maintain higher workrates than other mice. The genetic 'switch' which is responsible for forming this muscle type - as discussed (summary only, subscription required for full article) in the January 2007 issue of Cell Metabolism - brings us one step closer to developing drugs to change the composition of muscle; great for boosting strength in the elderly and those with muscle wasting diseases. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
